A walk around a Liberty Township roof
Liberty Township sits just west of Mason in Butler County, and a lot of its homes are two-story houses with busy rooflines: dormers, gables over the garage, a porch roof running into a wall. Those shapes look good, and they also create more places for water to get in. When we inspect a Liberty Township roof, we spend as much time on the transitions as on the shingles. This page walks through what we check, in the order we usually check it.
Start at the gutters. Granules piling up in the downspouts and gutters are a sign the shingles are shedding their protective layer. A little after a new install is normal. A lot on an older roof is wear.
Then the porch and garage roofs. These lower roofs usually die into a wall of the main house. Behind the siding there should be a step flashing at every shingle course and a kickout at the bottom edge. Without the kickout, water runs down the wall and behind the siding, and the damage shows up inside the wall long before it shows on a ceiling.
Then the dormers. A dormer has two sidewalls, a front face and two small valleys. Each of those is a flashing detail, and each has to be built in the right order so water always laps over, never under.
Then the main valleys and the ice barrier. Valleys and eaves are where ice and water back up in winter. On a replacement we install ice-and-water barrier where the roof and the applicable code call for it, then underlayment over the rest of the deck.
Then the attic. Two-story homes often have a small attic with tight eaves, which makes intake ventilation harder. If the attic runs hot or shows frost on the nails in winter, ventilation is part of the fix.
Last, the shingles themselves. If a full replacement is justified, this is the moment to choose a shingle upgrade, such as an impact-rated GAF Timberline UHDZ. If only the details are failing, a targeted repair may be the honest answer.

Liberty Township FAQs
Why does water show up on the wall below my porch roof?
That pattern usually points to a missing or undersized kickout flashing at the bottom of the roof-to-wall line. Water runs down the step flashing, reaches the end of the roof edge, and goes behind the siding instead of into the gutter. It is a common detail problem on two-story homes and is often repairable without replacing the roof, though the siding there has to come off to do it right.
I see frost on the attic nails in winter. Is my roof leaking?
Not necessarily. Frost on nail tips usually means warm, moist air from the house is reaching the cold attic and condensing. Causes include poor intake ventilation, gaps around light fixtures or attic hatches, and bath fans venting into the attic. We check those before blaming the roof. Fixing ventilation and air leaks can stop the problem without new shingles.
Is an impact-rated shingle worth it?
It depends on what you value and the price difference on your roof. GAF Timberline UHDZ carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, which HDZ does not. Some insurers offer premium credits for Class 4 roofs, but that varies by carrier, so ask your agent before deciding. We will price both in the proposal so the choice is clear.
